Our Brain Power and Intelligence are Greater Than We Think....

Brain power and intelligence are an expanding resource.

I am a self confessed 'infoholic' and recently came across an interesting article in 'Professional Manager' the journal of The Chartered Management Institute, here in the UK.

Those who have been receiving the Bulletin for a while will also know that I love learning. This is why the article 'rang a bell'.

The report was basically explaining intelligence and started with an interesting description of the brain.

'it sits between your ears, looks like a small cauliflower and weighs around three pounds. It's an organ you probably take for granted and know very little about'.

Hand up, Guilty!

It then went on to describe intelligence describing how hitherto there have been thought to be two areas of intelligence. Covering our ability to read, write, communicate plus reason and calculate.

I think I knew this. What I did not know is there is now a theory that a much larger picture is emerging covering more areas on our brain power and intelligence.

I am no expert in this area but I love learning. So on we go.

Why is it important to know about multiple intelligences?

Because in understanding how we learn influences our ability to learn. They go on to explain more theory but what caught my imagination was the 'Top Learning Tips' that flowed from the theory.

Being honest with myself I know a lot here applies to me so I pass it on in case it helps you.

1 Understand how you learn best - what is your preferred learning style? what gets you on the right wavelength for learning?

2 Organise your learning - be systematic.

3 Tap into your imagination. (it's my opinion that very few people fully use their imagination. Very few are able to visualise 'what if'? Most only deal with the past and the here and now). Which means if we use our imagination and take action we are ahead of the rest. You didn't need me to tell you that did you!

4 Adopt the best positive and constructive mental attitude.

5 Motivate, encourage and reward yourself to learn.

6 Find the right learning environment for you.

7 Match your healthy mind with a healthy body - eat well, exercise, get a good night's sleep.

8 You are never too old to learn. You will only use about 5% of your brain's capability in your life time, start tapping into the power of the 95%. Now that's the good news. As a 'mature' male I'm encouraged.

9 Nothing will ever change unless you take action. You must translate information into action.

10 Keep your brain stimulated - develop it's power, commit to being a life long learner.

11 Never underestimate your learning power. Your brain's potential, storage capacity and creativity are immeasurable. From: Effective Memory Techniques in a Week by Jonathan Hancock and Cheryl Buggy.

While setting this out for you I started thinking, am I just using other peoples stuff to create a newsletter. Then I realised that this thought was part of the process because the very act of pulling this all together has been a learning process for me.

How you may ask? Well for one example, I didn't know we only use 5% of our brain capacity so I am relieved to know that there is more power to come. I hope you are too!

The article goes on to stress the importance of a healthy lifestyle, using healthy recipes, avoidance of sleep deprivation and relaxation.

Topics for another time perhaps.

I enjoyed putting this article together and do hope that there is something in it that you are able to relate to.

Tip: Imagination is the highest kite one can fly.
