Never be Afraid to Learn a New Skill....

If you are ever made redundant you may have to learn a new skill if you start consulting

Anyone who has ever been made redundant will know the feeling. You know what you can do, what your skills are but as you skim through the job advertisements all sorts of inappropriate 'opportunities' start to seem attractive.

These 'opportunities' can deflect you away from your real purpose that is to continue with your successful career. As near as possible you have to follow through on what you know. Maybe this is why some people never think about going independent and consider being a consultant.

The word consultant can mean anything. This means that when you start consulting you almost can be anything. My contention is that any one can start consulting because if you can pass on, advise or carry out a specific task that few others can do you have knowledge only you possess.

The more specialised you are the greater your potential as a consultant plus the greater your earning potential.

Another contention is that when we have mastered a skill or learned a technique we immediately discount it. Because we can now do it we seem to think everyone else can. Not so.

No two people will do a thing the same way. In a given situation no two people will give the same advice in the same way.

Recognise these facts and you will soon see that you could start consulting. You can do it from home. You don't need to make huge investment and you build on the skills you have picked in your working and private life.

The biggest change you will face is the enjoyment. Doing something for yourself but at the same time being totally responsive and engaged with your clients. You will find you will become very entrepreneurial and you will need to develop a new skill.

You may never have had to do this as an employee. Salesmanship. What does that conjour up? Fast talking, can sell fridges to eskimos, sand to arabs. These stereotypes are what seem to put many people off so they turn away from the glorious opportunity.

You will just have to learn to sell your self and your ideas. If you are consistent, honest and approachable you will start networking and it will soon be second nature so you will come to enjoy it. If ever you are faced with the dilemma of what to do make sure you give serious consideration to developing yourself so that you may start consulting.
