Make sure Your Expert is an Expert - 'byobe' Bulletin 150. March 16, 2008 |
Hello & WelcomeIt's Worth Reviewing Your Setup....When in trouble call the experts. About three weeks ago I suddenly lost my printing capacity. Both printers hooked up to my PC failed to operate. With some investigation it seemed the driver programs had just disappeared. Trying to re-install the divers would not work the PC just would not accept them. For many years I have used a local chap who has been able to sort out such problems. He duly looked and it became clear he didn't know what it was or what to do. He made his excuses and left me to try one or two things, none of which worked. By now I was starting to become very depressed. A neighbour recommended someone who I contacted and together we worked through the problems which in the end stemmed from a failing hard drive. This little saga left me with a few pertinent business thoughts. The first chap who has helped me in the past is no businessman. Which explains why when I have suggested forming maintenance contracts with him he has always failed to pursue the idea. Perhaps just as well in view of his inability to help this time. The new man is a different proposition. He sees the sense, he is ready to provide a replacement PC while he solves the problem and plainly because he has the diagnostic tools and ability he has the confidence to form contractual commitments. This is reassuring. What did this all prove? 1 It's a good job I back up. 2 Instead of using my wife's laptop I need a dedicated laptop that runs in parallel with the PC. This has now been bought. 3 Your local expert on whom you come to rely may not be an expert after all. 4 Anyone with the right skills and training will make a good living helping the people like me who need them from time to time. I would have paid a lot of money to solve the problem and feel the charges made are very fair. If you are too reliant on your system I recommend you look at your configuration and support. Tip of the week. Backup, Backup, Backup!!!!!!!!! That's all for now. I hope you will enjoy your next issue of 'byobe' Bulletin - helping you to succeed. Best wishes, Michael Harrison.
