Effective Motivation. - 'byobe' Bulletin 156.
August 10, 2008
Hello & Welcome

Understanding Motivation....

Recently listening to a program dealing with successful people tracing their roots I heard an interesting insight. Sir Tom Farmer is a multi millionaire Scotsman here in the UK. The program was tracing his roots and humble beginnings in Leith, a district of Edinburgh.

He explained how his first job was as a 'stores boy'. After a while doing this he was keen to progress and took the driving test so that he could become a van driver. On the first day when he reported for his new job he went to the supervisor and said he was ready for work as a van driver.

At this he was invited into the office and told he would not be a van driver. Crest fallen at the dashing of his expectations he asked why. The supervisor said that now he could drive yes he would work driving the van, but! He had to understand that wherever he went he was representing the company. He was a 'company representative'.

I can connect with the psychology of this. Here was a young ambitious person who had worked to advance himself and was keen to start his new job. The people he reported to showed great insight knowing the importance of the role and were able to get him totally committed and enthusiastic because his new job that was more important than he at first understood.

I would confidently expect that this and other experiences like it are some of the reasons why Sir Tom Farmer built his business empire, became a multi millionaire who cherishes his roots and gives a great part of his fortune to charity.

Do you have any experiences that you can trace that were important in forming the person you now? If you think about I'm sure there are some.
