Getting Your Business Known 6 .... - 'byobe' Bulletin 071. June 11, 2006 |
| Hello & Welcome The importance of 'Presence'. In this series of articles we are trying to string together ways in which you can promote yourself and your business effectively. This is not just theory on our part because in life we all need to have 'presence'. In this context think of presence as making your potential market/clients know who you are, what your business is about and what you stand for. * Develop your physical presence. Be visible to your target audience. Get out and about - meet people. * Join appropriate professional networks and special interest groups. When you attend meetings and seminars establish your presence by sitting towards the front - perhaps to one side. When you stand up to ask a question relating to what you do everyone can see and hear you. Don't sit at the back like most people. You are different. * Learn how to use your voice so that your presence is established because everyone in the room can hear you. If necessary take voice coaching. * You will be judged in part by your appearance. Dress well. On all occasions dress suitably for the event and be smart. You only get one chance to establish your presence with a 'first impression' * Are you organised? If you are you will be ahead of most of the rest. You will have facts at your fingertips. Papers neatly accessible in a good quality folder or brief case. Because of the presence you create as time goes on people will look to you for comment and leadership. At the end of a highly intensive seminar I once was given a present to acknowledge the contribution I had made to the seminar. All I thought I had done was show keen interest by asking a few questions. (the present was a boomerang - and it works). * The name of your business is a tricky one. Only if you have a very strong presence in your field should you use your name. Try to create a name which is memorable and which describes in part what you do. * At all times show interest in people. Ask questions and listen. I don't like people who talk too much in trying to impress to establish a presence by showing how good they are. I suspect I am not alone. So when these types talk at me I switch off. I like talking with people who show interest and allow a dialogue. Listen and learn. These points subtly used will help you project your business and self as you establish your presence. Tip of the week. Don't talk about yourself others will after you've gone. That's all for now. I hope you will enjoy your next issue of 'byobe' Bulletin - helping you to succeed.
